Ask Aaron what makes the daily workflow run so efficiently, and he’ll point immediately to AutoContour, EZFluence, ClearCheck, and ClearCalc, all seamlessly integrated into the planning process. “AutoContour has saved us an incredible amount of time, especially with all the boost cases we handle that require new CT scans,” Aaron explains. “Not having to manually contour everything means I can focus more on planning strategy and optimization.”

EZFluence has also become a staple in their workflow, especially since the release of version 2.5. “RayStation’s built-in Auto-FiF tool is functional, but it doesn’t offer the same flexibility. EZFluence has essentially cut our planning time in half for breast and palliative cases, and we can easily make adjustments before sending the plan back to the TPS.”

For plan evaluation and quality assurance, ClearCheck ensures nothing slips through the cracks. “It simplifies plan review and helps us catch small details, like stray pixels in structures, that might otherwise be missed.”

But if Aaron had to pick a favorite? It’s ClearCalc hands down. “ClearCalc has transformed our secondary check process. We’re no longer tied to clunky third-party systems that require manual data input. It’s almost too easy, just one click, and it’s done.”

Automation in Action: Custom Scripting for Smarter Planning

Aaron isn’t just using Radformation tools, he’s elevating them through custom-built scripting designed to streamline his team’s workflow.

When ClearCheck and ClearCalc became available as standalone applications for RayStation®, Aaron saw an opportunity to reduce inefficiencies. He quickly developed a custom script that extracts patient data directly from RayStation and exports it to both ClearCheck and ClearCalc, thus eliminating time-consuming manual steps and reducing the risk of human error. But he didn’t stop there. He combined both tools into a single script with a pop-up window that offers several execution options.

In a smaller clinic where time and staffing can be tight, this kind of scripting innovation has had a big impact. By automating repetitive tasks and creating a cleaner, more intuitive workflow, Aaron has helped enhance both efficiency and accuracy in the planning process.

Though still early in his career, Aaron approaches his role with a mindset well beyond his years. “I genuinely love what I do, and that passion pushes me to keep getting better. I’m always looking for ways to improve speed and accuracy without ever cutting corners.”

His advice for other dosimetrists? “Stay curious. Be open to learning new techniques and tools. Keep pushing to be the best version of yourself, for your team, your clinic, and your patients.”

Outside the Clinic: Family, Fun, and Fandom

When Aaron’s not scripting or planning, life shifts into family mode. “Outside of work, I really enjoy spending time with my family. I have a wonderful wife and two young daughters (ages 2 and 6), so there’s never a dull moment at home. When I’m not in ‘dosi-mode,’ I like watching movies, playing games, and getting outside with the girls—whether it’s a trip to the playground or a day at the waterpark during the summer.” 

And there’s more to Aaron than beam models and contouring: “I have a pretty decent comic book collection and used to be an avid reader. I’ve always been a big fan of DC characters, Superman and Batman are my favorites. One fun fact: I actually have an autograph from Stan Lee, which is definitely one of the highlights of my collection.”

Bonus Round: Quick Hits with Aaron

 Favorite Vacation Spot: “Honestly, anywhere the kids can have fun is a great vacation spot for us. We love going to theme parks like Disney World or spending time at the beach; anything that keeps the girls happy and lets us enjoy time together as a family.”

Go-To Comfort Food:  “My go-to comfort food is definitely hibachi-style Japanese food. I absolutely love it and honestly, it’s something I could eat every single day!”
