Smarter Automation, Stronger Quality Assurance at Oncopole Claudius Regaud
Discover how François-Xavier and his team at Oncopole Claudius Regaud enhance patient care through innovative automation and quality assurance solutions.
“Our experience with the Radformation team has been excellent. Whether for Limbus or RadMachine, their support is responsive, effective, and well-attuned to our daily clinical needs.”
This month, we’re excited to highlight François-Xavier, a medical physicist who works alongside a dedicated team of 15 radiation oncologists, 9 other physicists, 6 dosimetrists, 45 radiographers, and 2 biomedical engineers at the Oncopole Claudius Regaud in Toulouse, France. The department is equipped with 4 Varian linear accelerators (2 Halcyon, 2 TrueBeam), 3 Accuray linear accelerators (2 Radixact, 1 TomoHD), 4 Nucletron afterloaders (HDR and PDR), and Eclipse for treatment planning. Together, they treat 3,200 patients annually.
François-Xavier says that many tasks are highly repetitive, consuming valuable time and still leaving room for human error. His goal was to find a solution that could streamline these processes, enabling them to focus on the most critical aspects of patient care without getting bogged down by lower-priority details. Like many physicists, the aim has been to optimize workflows, improve safety, and free up time for the tasks that demand the most attention.
With regards to Limbus Contour, Francois-Xavier says “After evaluating available solutions, Limbus contouring stood out for its ease of use, speed, minimal hardware requirements, and responsive customer support. Its intuitive design made integration seamless.”
By leveraging Limbus’s high-quality auto-segmentation, the team successfully scripted the creation of optimization structures directly in Eclipse. This automation has led to significant time savings, reduced the risk of errors, and enhanced workflow consistency. The combination of automation and precision has transformed the contouring process, allowing clinicians to work more efficiently without compromising accuracy.
Previously, Francois-Xavier and his team relied on an open-source QA solution but faced persistent IT challenges with updates and system management. Switching to RadMachine was a game-changer, providing web-based accessibility, automatic monthly updates, and the flexibility to adapt to clinical needs—all without the added IT burden.
“Its ultra-customizable tests have given us deeper insights into the core analysis of each QA check. The ability to integrate test results and track key parameters graphically has been invaluable, helping us refine our monitoring process and enhance the verification of our treatment machines. Compared to our previous tool, RadMachine provides a more targeted, data-driven approach to quality assurance, ensuring both precision and efficiency.”
A major regulatory change in France presented a unique challenge for the team, requiring a robust QA solution that could adapt quickly.
“The Radformation team not only listened to our challenges but actively incorporated our feedback into the tool’s development. Feeling heard and involved in shaping the solution to better fit our needs was a welcome and unexpected surprise, reinforcing our confidence in Radformation’s commitment to innovation and customer success.”
With its ultra-customizable tests and advanced data tracking, RadMachine has transformed the QA process, delivering precision, efficiency, and a smarter approach to quality assurance.
Francois-Xavier shares his positive experience working with the Radformation team: “Our experience with the Radformation team has been excellent. Whether for Limbus contour or RadMachine, their support is responsive, effective, and well-attuned to our daily clinical needs”
When asked what advice he would give to potential Radformation customers, he emphasizes the impact of purpose-built solutions: “I wouldn’t presume to give specific advice, but I can say that using modern tools built by experts who truly understand the needs of the field makes a significant difference. Radformation’s solutions seamlessly integrate into clinical workflows, enhancing both efficiency and confidence in daily practice.”
Francois-Xavier expresses his sincere gratitude to all his colleagues and friends at the Toulouse Oncopole Claudius Regaud, especially Aurelie and Marine, and asks for their continued forgiveness for his unique sense of humour. Special thanks to Juliette too.
When he’s not in the clinic, Francois-Xavier enjoys spending time in nature and he says "I’m lucky to have the choice between the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and our beautiful Pyrenees mountains. I particularly enjoy hiking or skiing in winter." In addition, he is a devoted supporter of Castres Olympique, his favorite rugby team and, "without a doubt, the best rugby team in the world!"
