Centralizing Imaging QA and Regulatory Compliance with RadMachine

To round out the year, we’re highlighting Dr. Andrew Sampson as our User of the Month this December. Leading the Clinical Imaging Physics division at UT Health San Antonio, Andrew oversees a dynamic and growing team that covers a central hospital, six imaging centers, and an MRI research institute. Working alongside another physicist and two imaging medical physics residents, Andrew ensures their department meets the highest standards in diagnostic imaging.

 

When UT Health San Antonio recently expanded, Andrew turned to RadMachine to help adapt and scale to meet new demands. He found the process surprisingly straightforward. “Once I had all the tests created for one unit, copying them to another unit was easy,” he explains. The efficiency gains didn’t stop there—RadMachine’s ability to simplify regulatory compliance and QC/QA audits has been a major improvement. “It’s incredibly efficient. Everything we need for site surveys is located within RadMachine,” he shares, describing how the database has become an essential part of their workflow.

 

One feature he finds particularly valuable is RadMachine’s ability to store and track data over time. With more equipment and data to manage than ever before, this functionality ensures his team can stay ahead of the curve.

 

When it comes to automation, Andrew’s perspective is thoughtful and balanced. He sees great potential in automation for tasks performed by technologists and experienced physicists but is mindful of its impact on trainees. “For junior physicists, automation can be a detriment. It takes them too far away from understanding how measurements are performed and analyzed,” he explains. To bridge this gap, he uses RadMachine as a teaching tool. “It helps my trainees learn the ‘why’ behind their work, so they can approach complex analyses with confidence.”

 

Looking to the future, Andrew envisions RadMachine continuing to streamline their operations, particularly in automating image performance and analysis, which can reduce variability in data acquisition. When asked what advice he’d give to other diagnostic physicists considering RadMachine, he doesn’t hesitate: “Do it—it will make your life easier.”
